This quilt is constructed using 2 ½” strips, which will allow for a scrappy appearance without having to cut and sew all those individual squares. In this class, you’ll learn some important organization skills, practice sewing an accurate ¼” seam allowance, learn how to square up blocks, and construct this very traditional block in a new and fast way.

Two size options are provided for this quilt – 56” x 66” and 80” x 90”

Master Challenging Fabrics-  In this two-day sewing course, you will learn to successfully sew challenging fabrics such as leather, fur, chiffon, cork, knit and more!!  Discover ways to make sewing easier by using proper feet, stitches and features of BERNINA machines for precise sewing.

Learn seam and hem finishes to "Sew like a Pro" on various fabrics. We will use the Creative Consultant, built in the BERNINA machines, to guide and lead students through the course. Students will sew on 20 different fabrics and compile the fabric samples in a Technique Book.  

Students will leave the class with the completed 20-page BERNINA Academy Technique Book and a BERNINA Academy collectible USB stick with inspiration, embroidery designs and projects for their next sewing session.  

Kits for all the projects, lunch and snacks included!  Students will be sewing on Bernina 590, 880 Plus and 790 Plus 

Instructor Bio: 

Cathy was born into a family of talented women, many of whom worked at the Lowell Textile Mills in New England. At the University of Maine, Cathy completed a Bachelors of Science, specializing in Clothing, Textiles and Design. Over the years, her love of sewing and quilting has evolved into her present role of Independent Consultant and Educator. An award winning sales person for several of the industry’s leading manufacturers, Cathy’s  work has been recognized and published. She enjoys teaching current and new owner classes for the full line of BERNINA sewing machines and related products. Cathy resides in San Antonio with her husband, Kevin. The couple have two children, Wes and Kate, and a son-in-law, Ryan, all graduates of Texas A&M University. Cathy is also a new grandmother.

Mad as a Hatter

This striking quilt is surprisingly easy to construct! There is very little waste, lots of opportunity for variation, and the pattern includes seven size options. We’ll be constructing this quilt using the traditional method, even though the pattern includes instructions for both traditional and foundation paper piecing. While making this quilt, you’ll get plenty of practice perfecting your ¼” seam allowance and accurate rotary cutting skills. The pattern includes a number of layout variations to help you achieve the effect you want.

She has a passion for embroidery that she incorporates into  her classes which include: embroidered quilts, home décor, overlocker projects and heirloom sewing. BERNINA Mastery and Software Clubs round out her teaching mix. Having grown up in the heart of Pennsylvania’s quilting country, Michelle has been
involved in sewing and crafts for most of her life. Since the late 1990’s, she has made the
sewing industry her career, working sewing/quilting shows and events, teaching classes and operating a wholesale drapery workroom. She has presented to groups of sewists ranging from 15 to 200 attendees. She resides in sunny southwest Florida.

Learn all about stitched raw edge machine appliqué in this informative workshop. Sue’s book “Stitched Raw Edge Appliqué” co-authored with her sister Pat Holly is the basis for this class. A small amount of fusible is used to seal the edge yet leaves the block soft. The machine blanket stitching makes this project secure for washing. Students will work on a practice sampler of ideas in class to learn the technique. Explore the details of inside and outside points, curves, circles and a great bias stem option. This is a technique class which allows time to explore the details of the technique. Feel confidant to work on any appliqué pattern after taking this class!

Sue’s major awards include 1998 AQS Best of Show for “The Beatles Quilt” made by Sue and her sister, Pat Holly. Their quilt, “The Space Quilt” won the 2003 IQA Master of Machine Artistry Award and the 2004 AQS Machine Workmanship Award. Sue and Pat’s quilt “Tea at Tenby” won 2009 Best of Show at the Birmingham Festival of Quilts in England. Sue’s current books are “Machine Quilting: A Primer of Techniques”, “Stitched Raw Edge Appliqué” co-authored with Pat and "Fabulous Feathers and Fillers: Design and Machine Quilting Techniques". Sue has also been a judge for many quilt shows. Sue enjoys teaching on cruises for "Quilt Seminars at Sea" once a year. Sue and Pat hold the Holly Girls Quilt Retreats at White Birch Lodge in Elk Rapids Michigan and plan to continue this yearly event for many years, following in the tradition of their good friend Gwen Marston's Beaver Island Quilt Retreats! Beginner/ 1 day. Learn the fundamentals of machine quilting on the home sewing machine. Start with an in-depth discussion on thread, needles and notions. Next, practice the basic techniques of straight line and free motion machine quilting on small quilt packages. Stipple quilting and marked designs will be covered. After learning the skills to feel confident with these techniques, Sue will demonstrate how to successfully baste; package and machine quilt the actual quilt.  Go home feeling confident to quilt any size and style quilt. Sue’s quilts will be shown for inspiration with lots of ideas for quilting the quilt- from traditional to modern style. With Sue’s patient guidance learn all the basic skills needed to machine quilt on your home sewing machine.

Sue and Pat hold the Holly Girls Quilt Retreats at White Birch Lodge in Elk Rapids Michigan and plan to continue this yearly event for many years, following in the tradition of their good friend Gwen Marston's Beaver Island Quilt Retreats! Sue’s priority in the workshops she teaches is to provide a relaxed environment for students to learn machine techniques that are timesaving. Add multi-colored pixie lights to make it dance with color. Santa Claus is constructed of fabric and thread and stands 12” tall. He will be the highlight of your holiday décor.

Log Cabin Hexagon Table Runner and Placemats

Get the best of both worlds when you combine fussy cut hexagons with log cabin piecing! You’ll learn how to fussy cut the hexagon centers, sew rings around the hexagons using a log cabin style technique, and how to construct the table runner with no in-set seams. Heavy template plastic makes cutting the hexagon centers a breeze, and a 60° ruler is helpful, but heavy template plastic can be substituted to cut the setting triangles of the table runner.

The Butterfly Sling Purse features two exterior zipper pockets, a professional looking closure strap, and a long, adjustable, cross body strap.
The surprise is on the inside! When you open just the closure strap only, you can access both a slip pocket and an internal zipper pocket, perfect for coins and bills. From there, you can also access both external zipper pockets that each have cards slot pockets for all of your charge cards. There is plenty of room in these other pockets for other items as well.
