First Cut in Fabric

First Cuts in Fabric using the Silhouette Cameo

The Silhouette Cameo cutting machine can cut over 100 materials including fabric. This class will present the Cameo and its powerful Silhouette Studio software. You will learn software basics, setting preferences, designing and manipulating shapes, opening and changing a ready-made design, and preparing and cutting your fabric. 

Class fee: $25.00 plus $5 Kit fee, Time: 10:00 to 1:00, Please bring a sack lunch

Cameo Silhouette will be provided by Chestnut Ridge. Please bring your laptop with Cameo Software download (contact shop for assistance). Class will include cutting project for Kimberbell Greeting Card (machines to complete projects will be provided by Chestnut Ridge Sewing).

Instructor Bio: 

Barbara Foster, Licensed Instructor, had her first sewing lesson in fourth grade and since then has added many other craft skills including crocheting, embroidery, counted-cross stitching, appliquéing, and card-making. In 2012, she received her first Silhouette Cameo and was hooked!  Her husband made a room in the basement where she could craft to her heart’s content, and she has often been known to say as she goes downstairs, “I will be Silhouetting!”

Barbara is a 2016 graduate of Terri Johnson Creates’ first Silhouette Instructor Licensing and has been serving Silhouette enthusiasts in Ohio and beyond. She can help you "Learn to love your Silhouette"!  So… Let’s Go Silhouetting!

Master Challenging Fabrics-  In this two-day sewing course, you will learn to successfully sew challenging fabrics such as leather, fur, chiffon, cork, knit and more!!  Discover ways to make sewing easier by using proper feet, stitches and features of BERNINA machines for precise sewing.

Learn seam and hem finishes to "Sew like a Pro" on various fabrics. We will use the Creative Consultant, built in the BERNINA machines, to guide and lead students through the course. Students will sew on 20 different fabrics and compile the fabric samples in a Technique Book.  

Students will leave the class with the completed 20-page BERNINA Academy Technique Book and a BERNINA Academy collectible USB stick with inspiration, embroidery designs and projects for their next sewing session.  

Kits for all the projects, lunch and snacks included!  Students will be sewing on Bernina 590, 880 Plus and 790 Plus 

Instructor Bio:

As a member of the BERNINA Tradeshow and Q-Series teams, Michelle enjoys interacting with sewing enthusiasts with all types of creative interests. Presenting for the BERNINA

Introduction to Ruler Work for Domestic Machines, Westalee Design by SewSteady Quilting Templates. By Geraldine Wilkins of Living Water Quilter, LLC

Through the Westalee Design by SewSteady domestic ruler system, experienced free-motion quilters will learn how to quilt beautiful designs with Westalee’s ruler foot, the 6-piece Quilting template set and the 12” Arc template.

The first half of the class will focus on

  • Westalee Ruler System – ruler foot attributes, template designs and functions
  • FMQ tools for success – how to set up a machine for ruler work
  • Sewing Machine setup – foot installation and tension
  • Ruler work technique – template guide lines, & quilt marking guides
  • Setting up your machine

Mad as a Hatter

Class Date: Wednesday, March 28. 9:30 – 4:00
Class Cost: $35 plus pattern

This striking quilt is surprisingly easy to construct! There is very little waste, lots of opportunity for variation, and the pattern includes seven size options. We’ll be constructing this quilt using the traditional method, even though the pattern includes instructions for both traditional and foundation paper piecing. While making this quilt, you’ll get plenty of practice perfecting your ¼” seam allowance and accurate rotary cutting skills. The pattern includes a number of layout variations to help you achieve the effect you want.

An award winning sales person for several of the industry’s leading manufacturers, Cathy’s  work has been recognized and published. She enjoys teaching current and new owner classes for the full line of BERNINA sewing machines and related products. Cathy resides in San Antonio with her husband, Kevin. The couple have two children, Wes and Kate, and a son-in-law, Ryan, all graduates of Texas A&M University. Cathy is also a new grandmother.
