Learn all about stitched raw edge machine appliqué in this informative workshop. Sue’s book “Stitched Raw Edge Appliqué” co-authored with her sister Pat Holly is the basis for this class. A small amount of fusible is used to seal the edge yet leaves the block soft. The machine blanket stitching makes this project secure for washing. Students will work on a practice sampler of ideas in class to learn the technique. Explore the details of inside and outside points, curves, circles and a great bias stem option. This is a technique class which allows time to explore the details of the technique. Feel confidant to work on any appliqué pattern after taking this class!

Teacher Bio:Sue has been quilting for 36 years, starting by hand and gradually focusing on machine work. Sue has been teaching machine techniques for the past 26 years. Sue has taught and lectured nationally for shops, guilds and major conferences, including AQS, IQA and the Mancuso Quiltfests. She has also taught internationally in England, Norway, Australia, New Zealand and Spain. Sue’s major awards include 1998 AQS Best of Show for “The Beatles Quilt” made by Sue and her sister, Pat Holly. Their quilt, “The Space Quilt” won the 2003 IQA Master of Machine Artistry Award and the 2004 AQS Machine Workmanship Award. Sue and Pat’s quilt “Tea at Tenby” won 2009 Best of Show at the Birmingham Festival of Quilts in England. Sue’s current books are “Machine Quilting: A Primer of Techniques”, “Stitched Raw Edge Appliqué” co-authored with Pat and "Fabulous Feathers and Fillers: Design and Machine Quilting Techniques". Sue has also been a judge for many quilt shows. Sue enjoys teaching on cruises for "Quilt Seminars at Sea" once a year. Sue and Pat hold the Holly Girls Quilt Retreats at White Birch Lodge in Elk Rapids Michigan and plan to continue this yearly event for many years, following in the tradition of their good friend Gwen Marston's Beaver Island Quilt Retreats! Sue’s priority in the workshops she teaches is to provide a relaxed environment for students to learn machine techniques that are timesaving. This quilt is constructed using 2 ½” strips, which will allow for a scrappy appearance without having to cut and sew all those individual squares. In this class, you’ll learn some important organization skills, practice sewing an accurate ¼” seam allowance, learn how to square up blocks, and construct this very traditional block in a new and fast way.

This striking quilt is surprisingly easy to construct! There is very little waste, lots of opportunity for variation, and the pattern includes seven size options. We’ll be constructing this quilt using the traditional method, even though the pattern includes instructions for both traditional and foundation paper piecing. While making this quilt, you’ll get plenty of practice perfecting your ¼” seam allowance and accurate rotary cutting skills. Beginner/ 1 day. Learn the fundamentals of machine quilting on the home sewing machine. Start with an in-depth discussion on thread, needles and notions. Next, practice the basic techniques of straight line and free motion machine quilting on small quilt packages. Stipple quilting and marked designs will be covered. After learning the skills to feel confident with these techniques, Sue will demonstrate how to successfully baste; package and machine quilt the actual quilt.  Go home feeling confident to quilt any size and style quilt. Sue’s quilts will be shown for inspiration with lots of ideas for quilting the quilt- from traditional to modern style. With Sue’s patient guidance learn all the basic skills needed to machine quilt on your home sewing machine.

Log Cabin Hexagon Table Runner and Placemats

Get the best of both worlds when you combine fussy cut hexagons with log cabin piecing! You’ll learn how to fussy cut the hexagon centers, sew rings around the hexagons using a log cabin style technique, and how to construct the table runner with no in-set seams. Binding Boot Camp

Do you have a stack of quilts that need binding but you just aren’t sure how to do it? Perhaps you’ve bound quilts, but aren’t happy with the results. If that’s the case, then this class is for you! Bindings are made easy in this class in which you’ll receive two kits that includes binding strips and a mini quilt on which to work so you don’t have to worry about messing up one of your own projects.

In the first half of the class, we’ll go through all the steps of traditional binding, from figuring out the yardage requirement, all the way to the hand stitching. In the second half of the class, you’ll learn how to attach binding completely by machine and add a splash of color at the same time. (This binding is NOT the backing brought to the front!)
